Patchouli: The Fragrance Everyone Knows… But Few Actually Know

If I say the word patchouli, what comes to mind?

For some of you, it's peace signs, tie-dye, and that one person at the Saturday market who could be located from three booths away. For others, it's simply, "No thank you." I'll admit, I used to fall into that second camp. But here’s something new I learned.

Patchouli has been getting a bad reputation for decades, while quietly helping create some of the most beautiful fragrances in the world.

Then I Learned Something That Made Me Pause...

Patchouli isn't a wood.

It isn't tree bark.

It isn't moss.

It's actually a member of the mint family (who knew right?!).

Yes...the same family as lavender, rosemary, basil, oregano, and mint. I know. I had to read that twice myself.

So Why Does It Smell Like...That?

Patchouli comes from the leaves of a tropical plant. Once harvested, the leaves are dried and distilled into an essential oil. On its own, patchouli is bold, earthy, rich, and unmistakable. It's the fragrance equivalent of someone who walks into a room and immediately starts telling stories. But in perfumery, it usually isn't meant to perform solo.

Instead, it's blended with notes like vanilla, amber, cedar, citrus, florals, and oakmoss, where it adds depth, warmth, and longevity. In other words... Patchouli is often the supporting actor, sometimes called a base note, which helps the leading fragrance become unforgettable.

A Little Fragrance Appreciation

Next time you're enjoying a candle or perfume with warm woods, amber, or forest-inspired notes, there's a good chance a tiny bit of patchouli is working behind the scenes.

You may not recognize it... but you'd probably notice if it wasn't there. Funny how that works.

So, you may ask, why am I telling you this?  I’ve been working on the next collection for Autumn and started noticing patchouli everywhere. And I wasn’t going to do that, nope! Then I took an inventory of some of the scents I currently have on hand, and yup, there’s patchouli sneaking up repeatedly.
