Chasing Twilight | A Moody September Evening Ritual

Chasing Twilight: Finding Beauty in September’s In-Between

September is a funny little month.

Summer hasn’t exactly packed its bags, especially here in Arizona, but something is beginning to shift. The days are getting a little shorter. The evenings arrive a little earlier. And if you happen to look up at just the right time, the sky seems to know the season is changing before the temperature does.

Burnt orange gives way to plum. Plum melts into violet. Violet deepens into that beautiful blue that only seems to exist for a few minutes before night takes over.

It’s one of my favorite kinds of light.

Between the Light and the Dark

There’s a name for that in-between time: twilight. It isn’t quite day, and it isn’t quite night. It doesn’t really belong to either one.

Maybe that’s what I like about September, too.

I am often so eager to move into the next season that I forget the transition itself can be beautiful. September doesn’t have to turn into pumpkins, sweaters, and crisp autumn mornings overnight. Around here, that would be asking quite a lot of a month still capable of delivering triple-digit temperatures.

Instead, maybe September can be September: with warmer days, changing light, deeper colors, and the first quiet hint that something new is coming.

Chasing Twilight

There’s a small window in the evening when everything seems to soften. The sun is no longer demanding center stage. The sky turns orange, purple, and violet. Even familiar places look a little different.

And it doesn’t last long.

Maybe that’s part of what makes it worth noticing.

We spend a lot of time moving from one thing to the next: finishing one task, starting another, closing one season and planning the next. Sometimes the space in between gets treated like something we’re supposed to hurry through.

But not every in-between needs to be rushed.

Sometimes it’s exactly where we need to be for a little while.

A Little September Ritual

This month, I’m leaning into the moodier side of September: warm oranges, deep purples, soft candlelight, a good book, and evenings that feel just a little quieter.

Nothing complicated. No complete seasonal makeover required.

Light a candle. Turn down the lights. Step outside for a few minutes. Make a cup of coffee or tea. Read a chapter. Put the phone somewhere else and watch the last bit of daylight disappear.

Cozy, after all, doesn’t require a temperature.

Until Next Time...

Before September slips away, find one evening to chase the twilight. Watch the orange fade into violet, light a candle, and give yourself a few quiet minutes with nowhere else you need to be.

There’s beauty in knowing where you’re going. But there’s also something pretty special about noticing where you are.

What does your perfect September evening look like?

Happy September!
